Under the supervision of the Manager of Patient Access, the Pre-Surgical Encounter Specialist is responsible for completing the accurate and timely scheduling, registration and f! inancial collection processes using versatile software (Meditech, AhtoA, PICIS). Scheduling is performed for Pre-admission Testing (PAT) nurse calls. The incumbent functions as a member of the larger patient care team, providing excellent customer service and follow up to patients, families and fellow staff members. Serves as a conduit for advocacy and providing resource information to patients and facilitates communication between patients and providers within an appropriate scope. Communicates effectively with patients regarding self-pay responsibilities and collects payments in accordance with policy.
Communicates with other hospital staff, departments and physician offices regarding the patients schedules and registration activity to promote an efficient, positive and seamless experience for the patient.
The incumbent is responsible and accountable for collecting accurate demographic and insurance information and statistical data as needed. The incumbe! nt identifies service- oriented trends and opportunities and b! rings them to the attention of the manager as required. Understands and is committed to helping Mercy Hospitalâs Surgical Services and associated areas reach its goals.
The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
High School diploma or GED is required. Post secondary education is desired; post secondary education in a healthcare related field is preferred.
Demons! trated knowledge of medical terminology is required; Formal training or certification in medical terminology is preferred.
Two years customer service experience required. Experience in a healthcare setting with surgical scheduling experience is preferred. Experience to provide an understanding of CPT codes or coding experience is desired.
Excellent customer service and communication skills required as the incumbent is the initial hospital contact for the patient and must be able to communicate effectively to obtain information while keeping the patient at ease under potentially stressful circumstances.
Excellent interpersonal skills required to interact effectively with all patients, families, colleagues, other hospital staff and physician office practices.
Requires knowledge of insurance verification including certify coverage; pre-approval; etc.
Requires organizational skills and ability to prioritize.
Ability to opera! te independently and accomplish all scheduling, registration and collec! tion duties with only general guidance.
