The Milieu Counselor, under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and/or Resource Nurse, is responsible to assist in carrying out indirect patient care activities. The Milieu Counselor is responsible for performing group education sessions and may be directed to perform psychosocial assessment/interviews. The Milieu Counselor is the multidisciplinary staff member responsible for the therapeutic community. The Milieu Counselor performs all selected care activities under the supervision of the Resource Nurse/Nurse Manager, according to the established policies, procedures, and standards of the Recovery Center at Mercy Hospital. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with standards established for the job. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position. In addition, the incumbent conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital. The Milieu Counselor will perform approximately 15 hours of face-to-face, direct clinical care via groups, 1:1 sessions, case management, etc. It is a requirement of the MC to attend 1 hour of clinical supervision twice a month according to the OSA guidelines. For every 4 hours of clinical supervision sessions attended, 1 hour of that must be 1:1 supervision. Supervision will be provided at the Recovery Center or may be done through and outside source provided proof of attendance is given to the Nurse Manager. The Milieu Counselor must be willing to undergo training to understand how withdrawal from substances can affect the patient’s response to treatment. Must have excellent interpersonal skills as the incumbent deals with patient, staff, and the public. Must be able to operate independently and autonomously with minimal guidance from the Resource Nurse/Nurse Manager. Must be highly accountable as the incumbent’s work and judgment affects patient care. Incumbent has access to highly confidential patient information and must adhere to the Federal Confidentiality law 42CFR-Part 2.

Licensure in order of preference:
Currently licensed in Maine as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor CADC or a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor
Other qualifications:
Within three (3) months, incumbent will be thoroughly trained in and competent in patient data collection, ASAM criteria and completing Social History Assessments. This initial training can be provided by Mercy/Recovery Center. Must have BLS certification within 60 days of hire. MOAB training and use of restraints training is preferred within six (6) months of hire.Licensure in order of preference:
