Purpose Statement
Abbot Evangelical Free Church exists to bring people to Jesus Christ, to encourage them to fellowship, to inspire them to worship, to guide them to Christ-like maturity, and to equip them for spiritual service, in order to glorify God.
Location/ Affiliation
The Abbot Evangelical Free Church (AEFC) is located in Abbot, Maine, in southern Piscataquis County. Abbot is a small, rural community with a population of 630. Piscataquis County is located in central Maine and covers an area of 3,770 square miles, with a population of approximately 17,000. Most of the population resides in the southern part of the county. AEFC is affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of America. It is locally controlled, congregationally ruled, and led by a board of elders.
Demographics
AEFC draws people from many ! surrounding towns, and the congregation is made up of people from a var! iety of church and theological backgrounds. The church is representative of the county in that it is predominantly white, blue collar, and showing a decline in the number of young families.
Worship
The diversity in our histories and church experiences is seen in a rather ânontraditionalâ atmosphere in our worship service. We strive to be led by the Spirit, so the services tend to be flexible, allowing for times of music, prayer, praise, and sharing about ministry opportunities, as well as preaching and teaching. The music is a mix of contemporary worship songs with some hymns. We aim for a freedom in worship that allows the congregation to draw closer to the Lord on a more personal level. While we desire for everyone to be drawn into worship, we also recognize there is room for growth in that area.
Church Life
The members and attendees at AEFC create a caring and friendly environment. Many people get together outside of church to shar! e common interests and participate in ministry opportunities. The AEFC is very mission-minded with both local and global outreach. Several members of the congregation have gone, and continue to go, on short-term over-seas missions trips. Many from our congregation are actively involved in a variety of local ministry outreach opportunities, and we continually look for new opportunities to reach the communities around us. Many others are involved by organizing, praying, giving, and offering support in whatever way they are able.
Our Sunday service begins at 10:30 am and is generally about 1 ½ hrs. During the summer months we move our Sunday service to an earlier time, allowing for more family/fellowship time. We offer Sunday School classes for all ages, pre-school through adult, from Sept.-June at 9:00 am. There are multiple Bible study and fellowship groups that meet during the week, and we lead a monthly service at one of the local nursing homes. The teen y! outh group meets regularly during the school year.
Theology
AEFC is a Christ-centered church, with an outward focus. We are somewhat conservative, focusing on the major Christian doctrines. Members and attendees come from a diversity of backgrounds. We are not a âcharismaticâ church, but neither are we âanti-charismaticâ in matters of personal worship, theology and experience.
Challenges and Dreams
Approximately 90% of the members and attendees have been Christians for at least 10 years, and many for over 20 years. While this provides a strong base for growth and a potential for reaching new believers, we would like to see an increase in the number of new believers worshiping with us. With 75% of the congregation being over the age of 50, we also see the gap left by the teen to 30âs age group. We look forward to finding ways to reach and âkeepâ them. We recognize that they are the future of the church and an important part of a healthy church and community. We have completed a number of buildin! g renovations and a major expansion of facilities over the last 15 years, and we believe the Lord has prepared us for potential growth. While our average attendance is 100-125, we can easily accommodate 200-250.
Community
There are local public school districts in the area, and many active home-school families and groups. Many needed services such as doctors, dentists, grocery stores, hardware stores, libraries, and banks are available in the area communities. However, major shopping, specialty shopping, or outings such as bowling and multiplex movies require a trip to the nearest large city of Bangor (pop. 33,000), which is approximately 50 miles away. Our region is well known for its outdoor activities and tourism. There are many lakes, rivers, parks, and wilderness areas. Some of the activities available include: fishing, hunting, hiking, boating, 4-wheeling, skiing, snowmobiling, camping, and snowshoeing. Access to the Appalachian Trail is about 10 mil! es from the church. Many of the local businesses support, and are suppo! rted by, these activities. There are many community and regionally sponsored activities which draw not only the residents, but also people from the surrounding communities and beyond.
