These are Per Diem positions which are located at the Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Portland, Saco, Lewiston-Auburn .
Two positions also available at VA Maine Healthcare System-Togus Augusta ME.

Salary is determined by a Nurse Professional Standards Board computed by education and experience.
The Primary Care staff nurse is a registered nurse responsible for continuous delivery of patient care to male and female adult population. The Primary Care staff nurse reports to the Firm Manager, Community Based Outpatient Clinic Coordinator or designee.
The staff nurse interprets the philosophy and goals of Nursing to others in the work setting; functions within established guidelines and demonstrates the ability to work effectively and develop sound relationships with patients, their caregivers and other professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care. The staff nurse plans care according to healthcare and age specific needs. The staff nurse will be proficient in computer skills such as CPRS and Vista and will be compliant with all computer security requirements. The staff nurse functions as a lead member of the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) to promote patient centric care for all Veterans.

DUTIES:
The Registered Nurse should:
Demonstrate the ability to function effectively in charge nurse, team leader, or other leadership roles. Applies problem solving skills at the unit or team level, using the team approach to identify, analyze and resolve problems.
Acts as a contact resource for team issues.
Uses sound clinical judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating nursing care.
Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs, assuring responsibility and accountability for nursing actions.
Completes initial assessments and reassessments of patient condition and response to treatment and other clinical findings. Initiates follow-up as needed.
Assesses, develops and implements a plan to meet patient's learning needs, including self-care and treatment measures.
Modifies approach based on knowledge of human behavior, motivations, and reactions to situations.
Routinely engages co-workers/team in active problem solving regarding clinical issues leading to an improvement of care.
Serves as a resource to other staff in meeting individual learning and discharge needs, recommends appropriate referrals, adaptive equipment and approved educational materials.
Documents data related to assessments, care provided and outcomes in the medical record.
Acts as a patient advocate when patient self-determination is in question.
Uses discretion in confidential matters and leads others in appropriately safeguarding confidential information.
Serves as a resource for patients and staff in addressing ethical issues.
Initiates action to resolve ethical/legal issues related to nursing practice in collaboration with appropriate resource people.
Applies knowledge of diverse nursing procedures and takes leadership role in using safe, cost-effective measures to provide care.
Identifies potential problems involving resources and/or safety and takes action to avert or manage the situation.
Demonstrates safe work practices for the position.
Participates in professional and staff development activities.
Provides for own continuing professional development by literature review, continuing education certification and/or formal education.
Identifies need for staff education at the unit/team/work group level, and organizes and leads staff in the presentation of unit/team/work group educational offering(s), informal or formal.
Self-directed in evaluating progress toward professional career goals.
Evaluates practice of self and colleagues against standards of practice and relevant regulations (i.e. professional nursing organizations, nurse practice acts, Joint Commission, OSHA) and acts to improve compliance.
Supports and encourages others to support and correctly interpret medical center and nursing policies/procedures, practices and protocols.
Assumes leadership role in identifying policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and protocols requiring review or revision.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
REQUIRED Qualifications:
Citizen of the United States.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Current, full, active and unrestricted nursing license from a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the U.S.
Be currently BLS Certified.
Associate Degree or Diploma from a state approved or NLNAC accredited program and approximately 2-3 years of successful nursing practice ; OR
Baccalaureate degree in nursing from NLNAC or CCNE accredited program and approximately 2-3 years of successful nursing practice (RNs appointed before 12/10/99 must meet interim education requirement of Associate Degree or diploma in nursing from NLNAC or CCNE accredited program); OR
Master's degree in nursing from NLNAC or CCNE accredited program and approximately 1-2 years successful nursing practice.
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research. Education/Experience Requirements:
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
